Welcome to the 12-15 Classroom:

Our 12-15 year old students at Blossom have the opportunity to explore the world in a variety of ways.  The computer lab is a place where students can access everything from the newest discoveries in the field of Science to the current rates of the Stock Market.  Additionally, a regular part of everyday life for our these students includes catching up with world events as reported in the on-line New York Times Student Edition (and yes, there is always a test!).

Mathematically speaking, we will move into Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1 and Algebra 2.  Statistics and probability problems become part of everyday discussions when Ms. Downing starts the day with a "let's discuss this" news fact from the St. Petersburg Times.  The bar is raised incredibly high in Math this year, and our Blossom students are definitely up for the challenge.

Learning will expand beyond the classroom walls during field trips to local venues.  The class has invited guest speakers to come and share their knowledge and the students themselves will attend important events within the local Deaf community.  Reading is all about discovering 'the classics' including the works of Edgar Allen Poe, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Mark Twain, Jules Verne, and Charles Dickens - just to name a few.  Reading is a main component of our curriculum, and is considered across the curriculum.

Vocabulary words are appearing on a regular basis - but now they are in ASL, Spanish, French and English!  Reading and writing a foreign language will not be a 'foreign concept' to Blossom students.  Expanding a student's language ability always serves to expand their understanding of the world.  With the addition of French and Spanish, Blossom's students will definitely have a variety of cultures and people to explore.

One visit to this classroom and you can see that the opportunities are endless and the spirit of learning is a true reflection of the mission of Blossom Montessori School for the Deaf.
